Tour Duration:
If you are departing from Chania, 12 hours from Rethymno and up to 15 hours from Heraklion, the entire organized tour takes about 10 hours. Tours usually start between 7 and 8 am (5-6 am from Heraklion and Hersonissos). If you are driving yourself, I would recommend leaving Chania between 8am and 8:30am. Drive needs About 1.5 hours.

Elafonisi from Chania:
Platano Tours is one of the best options for Chania. They also stop at a great bistro for some proper food. A guide also provides information along the way, which is a great bonus.

From Rethymno:
You have two possibilities. You have a more economical option which is to take the coach, or you can join a much smaller boutique group who will pick you up from your hotel, but it's more expensive.

From Heraklion:
It's going to be a very long day. Tours usually start with pickup in Hersonissos and end in Heraklion before heading to Elafonisi beach. Cretan Spirit is one of the most popular choices. You may also want to drive yourself, you should be there in 3.5-4 hours

Drive yourself:
This option allows you to stop at any village or interesting place along the way. You'll be more nimble, but remember that the roads are small and often change direction dramatically. The roads themselves are not dangerous, but they can be challenging, especially if You are used to driving on the left. I usually rent my vehicle at the best price on the DiscoverCars.com website. This is a comparison site, and it has never let me down.

Best time to go to elafonisi beach:

The best time to visit Elafonisi Beach is from May to October, during the summer season in Crete. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, and the sea is calm, making it perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The water temperature is also at its warmest during these months, averaging around 24-26°C.

July and August are the busiest months, and the beach can get quite crowded, especially during the day. If you prefer a more relaxed and peaceful experience, it's best to visit either in the early morning or later in the afternoon when the crowds have thinned out.

In May and October, the weather is still warm, and the sea is calm, but the beach is much quieter, and you can enjoy a more tranquil and serene experience. The surrounding nature is also lush and green during these months, making it an excellent time for hiking or exploring the area's flora and fauna.

Where to eat in Elafonisi

Unfortunately, as I've already said, the options on the beach are not worth calling home. Drinks are overpriced and mostly fast food. You can decide to bring your own food, or I personally recommend walking to Kalomirakis Tavern (about 20 minutes or 5 minutes by car). You will get a truly Greek experience at a reasonable price.

Why it's a pink beach

The quick answer is that the sand is actually mixed with millions of tiny fragments of pink shells that have been broken up by the waves over the years. I still remember a similar color on another beach I found in Indonesia, 1000 km east of Bali. Pink for the exact same reason. Small world, isn't it?

Beach Parking: The parking lot is divided into three levels. The top layer is the furthest flat, unshaded, and is usually the last to fill. The middle level has a few trees and some shade. This is the ideal place, but you need to come early in the morning to find a place. The last parking area is Adjacent to the lagoon and kite center. Parking is free, but I hear a daily charge is being introduced.

Toilette: There's one behind the tavern. It's as clean as it gets, and there are so many people around who use it. Entrance is charged.

Families and Kids

This is the perfect place for kids to enjoy. The water is also very shallow, suitable for small children. It's a worry-free experience. Energetic older kids can take some kitesurfing or windsurfing lessons, or take a walk around the island. If you want to bring some food, Avoid eating fast food from small beach shacks or beach taverns

Facts and Tips

Yes, Elafonisi Beach has been voted one of the top ten beaches in the world. It's an amazing beach, except on windy days, now you know how to avoid them. The food on the beach is not great, but you can go to Kalomirakis Tavern for real Greek homemade dishes. Kitesurfing takes place in the lagoon, while for windsurfing you should head to the easternmost end of the beach, where there is a small windsurfing center that offers lessons and hires gear. There isn't much wind on the beach, but once you're out, you'll have a lot of fun. Bring beach shoes if you have them, You decide to take a walk around the island and there are some sharp rocks around. July and August are two of the most popular months and you should book your tour or car well in advance.
