Elafonissi is a spectacular beach located just a few hours drive from the popular resort town of Chania. This famous white-pink sand beach is highlighted by the crushed shells that line the shore, giving it a faint pink hue. Which forms a beautiful contrast to the turquoise sea.

It boasts a reputation as one of the world's most picturesque beaches, with its charming pink sand. Separated by a narrow strip of sand are two shallow lagoons ideal for wading and swimming. The sand here is soft, unlike many of the pebbly beaches that are so common in the Mediterranean. Keep in mind that it can get very windy in Elafonissi, so be sure to check the wind forecast before heading out to make sure you can enjoy your day.

If you kitesurf or windsurf, this is the place for you. For ideal conditions for navigating in the shallows. A kitesurfing school offers lessons for those who want to get into this adrenaline-pumping sport.

The view of Preveli Beach with the deep blue Libyan Sea as a backdrop is nothing short of spectacular. Just one look will make you think the steep descent down a stone path will be worth it, and you'll be right. If you don't want to walk, you can always take a boat from Plakias.

The beach is sandwiched between two steep hills and has a freshwater stream running through the middle. When you just come back from the beach, you will find palm trees that create the feeling of a green oasis in an arid area. There are no chairs or umbrellas to rent here, so be prepared. The water is clear, but keep in mind that the beach is made of pebbles.

The ascent and descent should not be underestimated. It is rocky and in some stone areas the stairs are present. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, and make sure you have some water in reserve, as climbing in the blazing afternoon sun can be strenuous work. If you have your own car just follow the signs to Preveli Monastery, as you get closer the road forks to the left to a large parking lot on top of a hill. From here the descent begins.

If you are interested in a view from above, go to the top of the parking lot and a little further to see the beach.

Balos Beach 4# of 11# best beaches in crete
Balos easily ranks in the top 5 beaches in Greece (and probably the top 10 in the world) as these are some of the most incredible waters you will ever see. The area is protected by NATURA 2000, which basically means there are hundreds of rare animal and plant species and of course hunting and fishing are strictly forbidden. The area is literally a haven for monk seals and sea turtles! The beach has very shallow water, which makes it ideal for children, and the sand has pink sands (from millions of crushed shells).

Also, a little paradise for diving! If you visit the beach in July and August, there will be many people around, but the best thing is to go to Balos as early as possible in the morning to enjoy the beauty of the landscape. Quite lonely… (basically before the boats from Kissamos arrive if possible). There are some canteens where you can buy water and drinks (these only appear in the summer months of June, July, August).

Similar to Elafonissi, the beach is connected to an offshore island, resulting in shallow lagoons and calm waters. Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana visited this beach on their private yacht, and once you arrive you'll see why they stopped.

Beautiful soft white sand and amazingly clear turquoise water draw you to this little piece of paradise. Consider driving. This allows you to set your own times and avoid the crowds that arrive at the frequent boats. The road is gravel and can be a bit bumpy, although the local government is working to improve the situation.

Stavros beach 5# of 11# best beaches in crete
Stavros (i.cross) is a coastal town located 17 km northeast of Chania at the northern end of Cape Akrotiri. A distinctive feature of the area is the steep camel-shaped Vardies Mountain that rises opposite the Stavros Pass. The mountain is famous because scenes from the 1964 film "Zorba the Greek" where Anthony Quinn danced the famous Sirtaki dance were filmed there. Stavros was then a modest fishing village. Today the region has become an important tourist center with many hotels and important tourist infrastructures. The two beautiful beaches in the area have contributed to the development of the area.

The main beach is east of town, at the foot of Mount Vardies and next to the picturesque harbour. A semicircular lagoon forms, completely sheltered from the winds that blow in the region. The small bay has wonderful white sand and shallow turquoise water. The contrast of the wild mountain with the calm beach in the foreground makes Stavros a unique place for swimming. As expected, the beach is very well organized and offers all kinds of services.

The second beach of Stavros is north of the village, 200 m northwest of the main beach. It has sand and rocks in places and is less organized than the first, but cleaner. The main disadvantage of this is that it is unprotected, and the sea is usually rough. On the peninsula that separates the two beaches of Stavros, you can see the remains of the old quarry used to quarry limestone to build the walls of Chania during the Venetian era (13th-17th centuries).

It's definitely not a beach for families or children, apart from the difficult walk to get there To get there you also have to climb steep rocks. It's not easy... Also, there is no water or food nearby, so be prepared...

Although up for debate, Seitan Limania is considered by many to be one of the most spectacular beaches on the entire island of Crete. Located in a gorge that flows into the sea, this small beach is simply stunning. The water here is calm and relatively shallow, making it ideal for those who aren't good swimmers.

Perhaps the only downside to Seitan Limania is that the water can be relatively chilly for swimming. Locals say this is because the canyon's soaring walls keep the sun from heating it up.
